Overview of Air Freight (4513-AF)

— A unit load device (ULD) is a pallet or container used to load luggage, freight, and mail on wide-body aircraft and specific narrow-body aircraft. It allows a large quantity of cargo to be bundled into a single unit. Since this leads to fewer units to load, it saves ground crews time and effort and helps prevent delayed flights. Each ULD has its own packing list (or manifest) so that its contents can be tracked. There are currently 900,000 ULD's in service worldwide. Lightweight and durable ULD air cargo containers are often made from Clear Polycarbonate, or Flame-Retardant Polycarbonate Sheets for visibility and parcel protection in transit. Aircraft are quickly loaded and unloaded of their freight in these durable air cargo shipping containers. ULDs come in two forms: pallets and containers. ULD pallets are rugged sheets of aluminum with rims designed to lock onto cargo net lugs. ULD containers, also known as cans and pods, are closed containers made of aluminum or combination of aluminum (frame) and Polycarbonate Walls (brands include: Lexan®, Tuffak®, Makrolon®).

Professional Plastics provides Polycarbonate sheets and a wide variety of impact and wear-resistant materials such as HDPE, UHMW, LDPE, and ABS used in smaller custom containers, bumpers, rails, cleats, guides, and sliders. We also offer shock-absorbing foams such as polyurethane and PVC-NBR foams. Thermoformable flame-resistant plastic materials such as; Kydex®, Boltaron® and Royalite® may be utilized for bins, boxes and totes, or used to protective various surfaces in the cargo hold.
